SACRAMENTAL JOURNEY

St John Bosco Parish desires is to work closely with parents, the Parish Sacramental Team, Parish Catechists, and the St John Bosco primary school to prepare students for the reception of sacraments.  Sacraments are about growth with Jesus and a growth with the faith community - which is the parish and the universal Catholic Church.

THE ROLE OF FAMILIES

Parents are the first faith educators of their children and most particularly model this through the witness of their lives. Parent involvement in sacramental preparation is crucial in shaping the values and attitudes of each child. Knowledge is not the key factor for parents but faith and a willingness to spend time sharing with your child.

SACRAMENTAL REGISTRATION

Parents of children who will be receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation this year are asked to

1)  Register On Line

2) ENROLL your child for the reception of the Sacrament at a Weekend Parish mass.
ENROLLMENTS will take place on the weekends of:
4/5, 10/11, 17/18
and 25/26 March,  during all Masses.
Come to the mass with your child, and you will sign a form at the mass within a simple ritual that highlights your commitment to your child's faith journey and helps the child to see it is a journey.

Confirmation: 28th July Saturday   6 pm,  and 29th July at 11.30 am and 2:30pm

SACRAMENTAL JOURNEY 2012

St John Bosco Parish   &   Parents /Guardians of Participants

PARTNERS WITH CHRIST and EACH OTHER

Dear Parents/Guardians of Children wishing to journey through First Reconciliation, First Communion or Confirmation  in 2012,

I am delighted that your child and you are part of our parish family.   I am delighted that at this time you are considering another sacrament within your child's journey of faith that you began with them at Baptism.

There are four major stages in any Sacramental faith journey:
Enquiry: a desire to grow in faith through a Sacrament.
Preparation: A more intense period to prepare for the Sacrament.
Celebration of the Sacrament.
Living Out: deepening of our lives through the sacrament.

So often we focus on celebration with only some preparation, we can miss out on the other stages, as the following cartoon illustrates.

How can you strengthen your child’s experience of their next sacrament and its connection to their faith journey?

What stages do you wish to strengthen with your child?   Is it the enquiry stage:  reflecting on 'Why you are considering this sacrament?   How will it help?    What do you hope it will give your child, or how will it support your dreams and hopes for your child?

Do you wish to strengthen their preparation stage for the Sacrament?
What about strengthening the celebration of the sacrament itself; knowing what to do and understanding its symbolic language?
How can you strengthen their living out of the sacrament to continue to enrich your child’s life?

Our parish acknowledges that parents are the prime educators of their children in all aspects of their lives, including faith.    The parish community is committed to supporting you and working with you to pass on our faith, our Catholic story, our values, our traditions, and introducing them into the Sacramental life of the Church.

My hope is that you and your child will be supported in all four stages of the sacramental journey.    I know God has many hopes and dreams for your child and our community.   I know the Sacraments are an integral part of realising some of those dreams and hopes - and the more effective we can celebrate and live the Sacraments, the closer we move towards those dreams and hopes being real for the children and the community.

So what are we asking you to do now?

REFLECT with your Child:  I invite you to reflect with your child on those questions I have posed for Stage One - the enquiry.  Reflect with your child on why and what your child and you, hope to gain from the Sacrament?   Share with them your answers, of course in their language and levels of understanding.  At times you will struggle with the right words, but they will understand your love and passion, no matter what language you use.
Once you have done this, and believe your child is ready for the journey of receiving this next sacrament - I invite you to:
ENROL by presenting your child at a Sunday Eucharist during the following weeks of  Lent;
4/5, 10/11, 17/18 and 25/26 March.

Register on-line:

I thank you for your ongoing commitment to share your faith with your child and pray that the Schools and Parish can work with you to make this sacramental journey significant and real for your child.

Yours in Christ,
Fr Mick Court (Parish Priest)

Here is the sacramental vision in a picture again ...

Print the following form for a friend if they cannot do the online registration:

Those who do not register or enroll and still wish to be part of celebrating the sacraments in 2012, please write a letter explaining why you missed out and what this sacrament means to you?  (for Reconciliation and Eucharist - it is obviously the parents position, but for confirmation it is both parents and child that need to make this decision.)
Book an appoint with Fr Mick and bring the letter.
We will have a discussion about is your child ready at this time for the sacrament?

Thanks for considering the gift of another sacrament for your child. I pray with you that it might be another way in which God continues to touch the heart of your child, supporting them and calling them to grow. Please reflect, pray and complete the following. Dear Fr Mick, After reflection and prayer, I/we believe our child is ready for another sacrament to help them grow in their faith.
